Long before anyone thought of The MDs as part of Puerto Rican rock history, they were simply a group of very young students trying to create something of their own. A new communication form that represented more than an opinion and or a mere attitude. Little did they know.
The band came together at the end of the 1970s, at a moment when the musical landscape in Puerto Rico was very different. Two words come to mind, Disco and Salsa. Certainly there was no established path for a band making this kind of music, and certainly no expectation that something created by a group of teenagers would still be attracting listeners and collectors more than four decades later.
That lack of a roadmap may have been an advantage.
The MDs borrowed from whatever excited them—hard rock, new wave, punk energy, synthesizers and the music arriving from outside the island—and turned it into something that sounded like themselves.
Eventually those experiments became an album: Brain Damage.
This archive is our attempt to preserve what happened next—and, whenever possible, tell the story through the memories, photographs and documents of the people who were actually there.
